STOP BLIGHT | What is the Broken Windows Theory?

Back in 1982, the Broken Windows Theory was introduced for many to consider. It is a criminologist's view that deterioration and incivility are linked to each successive sign of urban vandalism. It was determined with any increase in the number of broken windows, trash in the streets, and painted graffiti, there was, marked signs of deteriorating neighborhoods and communities.

Disturbing is the large-scale gang graffiti that appears - and remains in-place - as tactical slogans of retribution - promote fear, anger and hopelessness, not hope for the future.

We should take full notice! Petty crimes lead to more serious crimes. Broken windows eventually lead to broken hearts and broken spirits, as communities spiral into deeper crime and violence. Society pays a huge price - a cost - when only blight is left behind.

When public spaces lack stewardship - a single piece of trash starts as a sore, that festers into predictable downward community deterioration with additional litter.
